Been Busy…
by Russ on Sep.07, 2011, under Uncategorized
Well nearly 6 months have gone by since my update. I got all the parts for my quadcopter and built it but had a heck of a time trying to get certain things working. Figuring out that the slightly smaller propellers I ordered (the size I wanted was backordered) were producing only about half the lift didn’t help either.
But more importantly than that, my life changed. For about a year I worked at Google in Kirkland, WA doing some interesting albeit mind numbingly boring and repetitive work with Google’s business data and special projects. I was happy to have a job but nevertheless continued to apply away for positions at companies that related to my degree (EE) doing challenging and rewarding work. I had some interviews but never seemed to make it to the next round…
Fortunately that changed as I am now a resident of California working for Intel in Folsom doing very challenging, ambitious, and rewarding work with their chipsets. While I am still learning the ropes and hanging on until our new group gets situated and trained, it is very rewarding to know that soon every single Intel PC shipped will have my work in it. There’s a guy here whose work has shipped in over 2 billion chipsets!
Anyhow, what does this mean for my website and projects? While I am in the process of moving/unpacking/looking for somewhere more permanent, I should be able to finish details on some projects including a second quadcopter I’m building (think about what that means and how I feel about the first!). Soon I should be getting information about that Turnigy 9X radio mod posted.
So we’ll see. But I am still alive and have not forgotten about my site!
Changing Hosts

I am in the process of changing hosts. The current one is fine but the new one should be faster and easier to maintain. The site will be down while the DNS change propagates.
Quadcopter Parts On The Way!
by Russ on Feb.24, 2011, under Uncategorized
I’ve been interested in building a tricopter or quadcopter for some time now but was bouncing back and forth on which to build and how to do it. What stopped me was trying to figure out a practical way to control yaw on a tricopter (rotating motor – how you actually do this is tricky) or what kind of stabilization system for a quadcopter. I decided that for a first build I wouldn’t want to mess with the tricopter’s yaw mount. It was when I heard about the MultiWiiCopter that the whole plan came together and I ordered everything.
I ordered:
(5) 2210N 1000Kv Brushless motor for AXN Floater
(5) HobbyKing 12A BlueSeries Brushless Speed Con
(1) 7×3.5 Propellers (Standard and Counter Rotat
(1) Prop Saver w/ Band 3mm (10pcs)
(1) XT60 Harness for 2 Packs in Parallel (1pc)
(1) Turnigy Pure-Silicone Wire 20AWG (1mtr) RED
(2) Turnigy Pure-Silicone Wire 20AWG (1mtr) Blac
(1) HobbyKing Micro UBEC 3A / 5v
(1) XT60 Connectors Male/Female (5 pairs)
(1) ZIPPY Flightmax 2200mAh 3S1P 20C
I’m Back!
by Russ on Oct.05, 2010, under Hosting, Website
Over the last week or so my site was offline due to a hosting glitch that carried over from a few months ago when they migrated a bunch of others and I to a different server. I have restored a backup I had made at that time and will be adding back the new content that wasn’t in the backup. If something is broken let me know!
Wii Nunchuk & MotionPlus Demonstration

A while back I recorded a video demonstrating a Wii Nunchuk connected to a Microchip PIC. Today I recorded one demonstrating the Wii MotionPlus. Be sure to check out the project pages for more details including code. First, here are the videos!

HP 16500 X11 Tutorial Up!
by Russ on May.21, 2010, under Howto
I’ve been working on fully documenting how to remotely control a HP 16500 logic analyzer via X11. This guide was written because I was intrigued by the fact that this LA could be remotely controlled and is very reasonable price-wise on eBay. However, there were only a few bits and pieces out there on how to do it. Particularly, getting the fonts installed was one challenge that I had to toy with a bit before it worked. Anyhow, definitely check it out if you’ve got a 16500 and want to more easily control it.

This is my new website where I will detail project ideas and projects I am working on. I am using WordPress because it is a convenient format that allows comments and some neat plugins; do not expect blog-like updates.
